Learning to program in Ruby is easy, but learning to program the "Ruby Way" is a much greater challenge. Programming large projects can be a quite tedious projects that needs lots of code refactoring again and again, if the code is not well written from the. I've never read much on design patterns before. Whenever a new programmer asked me about patterns, that was the book I would hand him. So, in a previous post, I talked about a nice design involving a proxy/delegator object that impersonates the result of a closure passed into it. In short: This book is good, go buy it. One of them is Design Patterns in Ruby by Russ Olsen. Sitting on my desk at work is a copy of trusty the old GoF book. He recently posted a look at the Singleton design pattern, with some Java and C# based examples. €Design Patterns in Ruby documents smart ways to resolve many problems that Ruby developers commonly encounter. I just finished reading Design Patterns in Ruby and think it is worth a mention even if you are a dedicated iPhone developer. Obsing I am going to be posting a few articles related to Software Design Patterns and how they are applicable to Ruby. Over at the CodeSnipers site, Rusty Divine is running a multi part series on design patterns. The next time, I think I'll hand him Design Patterns in Ruby instead. Now that I'm done reading Geekonomics, I'm on to reading a few books in parallel. The first two patterns that will be covered are the Observer Pattern and the Singleton Pattern. I am back from the holiday break and a perfect storm has come together, I'm currently working on a rails project, and I have a wonderful girlfriend who embraces my geekiness and buys me Design Patterns in Ruby. Recommended if you're new to object-oriented design, or if you want to learn about some Ruby-specific design patterns, or if your coworkers quote heavily from this book. They're definitely worth the read if you're interested in design patterns and know something about Ruby, although I don't know whether my notes would stand up very well if you don't already know Ruby.
